Discover the French countryside around Normandy on this artisan adventure while staying at centrally located Chateaus. Join Internationally acclaimed artist, Sue Averell, as she shows you how to see your subject through color and line. There will be instruction using a variety of materials including, pen, graphite & colored pencil, charcoal and watercolors while exploring unique settings along waterfront towns, villages and Giverny. See where the impressionists took their inspiration and visit local artisans. French Countryside Drawing & Watercolor Workshop w/ Sue Averell is your chance to understand Normandy through an artist’s eye.

Itinerary

July 11: Day 1 – Paris/Chateau Sommesnil
Arrive from USA to Charles de Gaulle airport Paris at 10:00 A.M. transfer to Chateau Sommesnil by air conditioned coach. Lunch on the way and dinner at chateau. If time stop at abbey. Overnight at the Chateau Sommesnil (6 nights)

July 12: Day 2 – Chateau Sommesnil
French breakfast and tour area and decide on a painting site and amount of time as per instructor’s selection. Visit Veule les Rose and Vargegnvill. Free time and lunch and dinner on own. Time to paint/draw as per instructor’s direction.

July 13: Day 3 – Giverny/Chateau Sommesnil
French breakfast and visit to Chateau Martainville which houses excellent history of Normanday. On to Giverney, where the impressionist artist Monet lived for the last 43 years of his life. See the famous water garden which he painted many times. Painting site and amount of time as per instructor’s selection. Dinner at Chateau Sommesnil.

July 14: Day 4 – Honfleur/Chateau Sommesnil
French breakfast then on to the historic port of Honfleur. Tour of town and then painting site and amount of time as per instructor’s selection. In Honfleur visit the church Saint Catherine to see the pipe organ and the carvings of medieval instruments into the railing below the organ. Visit the Eugene Boudin Museum to view Norman costumes, paintings by Boudin and Rachet. If you are feeling as though you would like some exercise take the steep 15- minute walk up to the Cote de Grace viewpoint. There is much shooping available in Honfleur or have refreshment near the harbour. Free time. Lunch and dinner on own. Return to Chateau Sommesnil.

July 15: Day 5 – Small Village/Rouen/Chateau Sommesnil
Visit Chateau Sissy, Petite Dalls, Rouen. In Rouen visit the cathedrale Notre-Dame crowned with the highest spire in France and painted many times by Monet. Visit the Musee des Beaux Arts which is one of Rouen’s cultural mainstays. See works by Caravaggio, Velasquex, Poussin, Monet, Renoir, and Sisley and painting site and amount of time as per instructor’s selection. Lunch provided. Return to Chateau Sommesnil.

July16: Day 6 – Etretat/Chateau Sommesnil
French breakfast possible visit local market depending on day of arrival and/or visit Etretat on the Normandy coast. At first it may not look inviting but a closer look will reveal spectacular stone formations famously immortalized in paintings by the Impressionists – Montet, Bouding, and Maupassant. Paint as per instructor’s selection. Lunch provided. Dinner on own. Wine tasting back at Chateau Sommesnil.

July 17: Day 7 – Chateau Sommesnil/Chantilly
French breakfast and then on to Chantilly where the tour stays at a local hotel. The chateau houses medieval manuscripts, tapestries, furniture, and paintings. Works by Italian painter-Raphael and French painter – Jean Fouquet. Visit the chateau and painting site and amount of time as per instructor’s selection. Lunch provided. Free time to explore and dinner on own. Dinner can be at the hotel depending on the day or transport to a local restaurant. Hotel TBA

July 18: Day 8 – Chantilly/Paris Airport or Paris
Continental breakfast and then on to Charles de Gaulle Airport. From there you can make your way into Paris for a tour extension.
